Dune HD Pro : A Premium Entertainment System using the Sigma Designs SMP8910

Dune HD  is one of the most respected middleware developers in the media player scene. By exclusively restricting themselves to Sigma Designs, they have managed to produce an enviable lineup of media players coveted by many people. It was not much of a surprise, then, that their latest offering, the Dune HD Pro received a CES innovation award.

When it was announced in late fall last year, the unit was a silver colored monolithic design. In the space of a few months, it has undergone revisions to become more of a modular design.

The unit in the middle is the player housing the main SoC, the SMP8910. It also has all the DACs for full multichannel analog audio output. The module on top is the Blu-ray / HDD add-on, while the third module
is a NAS system with 4 bays and a touchscreen based control unit. Unfortunately, I couldn't play around with the system because the display was running a canned video, and the unit was just showcased without being powered on (at least in the time that I was at the booth).

The main unit comes in at $1900, and I was told by the Dune rep that the rest of the pricing wasn't fully decided yet. At around $2000, it is difficult to justify the purchase of a media player for a majority of the consumers out there. Hopefully, a lower cost version (with just the SoC, couple of USB ports, wired Ethernet, SPDIF optical out and HDMI 1.4a output) will come out soon.

Much has been said about the SMP8910 and its VXP video post processing. I won't go into the details in this piece, but suffice to say that a large number of users are waiting for the SoC to make an appearance in shipping products and believe that only the premium features offered by the SoC can save the local media streamer market from its current rut.

One of the biggest challenges to be faced by the Dune HD Pro (other than consumers accepting their pricing strategy), is the Cinavia DRM system. While I couldn't elicit any official response from the Dune
representatives, I understood that

Cinavia DRM was included in the latest SDK supplied by SigmaThe Cinavia behavior with that SDK wasn't the same as that of the PS3.

Since the SDK is quite immature, not much can be inferred from the current state. However, Cinavia is a threat that Dune is perfectly aware of. It will be quite interesting to see how it is handled.

At CES, Dune also showcased their IPTV platform (Dune HD TV-101/301) which looks very similar in form factor to the WDTV Live SMP and is targeted towards the same market. In the US, the WDTV Live SMP is well placed, and I believe the Dune HD TV series will find its feet in other markets.

Partnerships with THX and Vudu have also been made public. You can read all about that in the official press releases [1 ] and [2]. It is highly possible that one may be able to watch Vudu in HD on the  various Dune units (based on the SMP8642) already in the market.

Dune also confirmed that the current lineup (Smart series, HD Duo and HD Max) would remain in production and continue to use the SMP8642. There are no plans to shift to a SMP8646 model unless Sigma Designs decides to completely stop shipping the SMP8642 before the SMP8910 lineup takes off.

There is no firm shipping date set for the HDI Dune Pro, but a large number of media streaming enthusiasts (including me) are waiting in anticipation just to see how good the SMP8910 is!

PS3 System Software Version 4.00 Adds Vita Support

Sony has released System Software version 4.00 for PlayStation 3 owners. This update primarily supports integration with the PlayStation Vita, which is launching in Japan on December 17 (the North American and European launch date is February 22). Otherwise, this major version jump brings relatively few new features relative to versions 2.00 and 3.00. 

WIth this update, the PS3 gains the ability to transfer video, images, music, and game data to and from the Vita. You can also backup your Vita to your PS3, and register the Vita as a Remote Play device. A few other changes round out the update: Blu-ray content now supports "upscaler output and cinema coversion," English (UK) and Portuguese (Brazil) langauge support has been added, and new privacy settings allow users to block other users from sending them messages or friend requests. Lastly, PlayStation Plus members may now choose what software is updated by the Automatic Update feature.

Other gaming consoles will also be seeing fairly major software updates ahead of the winter holidays: the Xbox 360 will be getting its biggest overhaul since 2008's New Xbox Experience update, which will bring support for cloud game saving, Skype, a new Metro-style interface, and other features. Nintendo's 3DS will gain the ability to film 3D videos, transfer software between devices, download game demos, and download software while in sleep mode. Both of these updates are scheduled to hit next week.

AVADirect Compact Gaming PC: Small Case, Big System

It's easy to build a powerful desktop if you take a big, beefy enclosure like SilverStone's FT-02 or the Thermaltake Level 10 GT and just fill it with the highest performance parts on the market, overclock them, and call it a day—and certainly we've seen our share of those. Taking all of that raw performance and shrinking it into a MicroATX case can be a little more difficult, though, especially when you're dissipating a cumulative TDP of at least 730 watts. Yet when we saw that AVADirect had produced another compact but incredibly high performance gaming desktop, we had to take a look. Gulftown may be on its way to bed soon with the advent of Sandy Bridge-E, but let's see if we can't give it one last hurrah in the process.

Computex 2011: Intel Demonstrates Fanless 95W TDP Sandy Bridge All-in-One System

That's right, what you're looking at is a 95W TDP Sandy Bridge All-in-One system that is cooled only via large heatsinks and no fan. Heat rises upwards and is vented out of the top of the machine but Intel says it doesn't need a fan. Apparently Intel holds some patents on the design and is willing to share it with its partners.

Logitech Speaker System Z623 Unveiled Complete with THX Cert

Logitech has been offering Speakers and all manner of other computer gear for a long time. The company today has announced its latest 2.1 speaker system for computer users called the Logitech speaker system Z623.

The Z623 is THX Certified meaning that it has had more than 400 tests performed to cover frequency response, power and more. What it means to the user is that the speakers should sound great for gaming and watching movies. The speaker system will ship next month for $149.99.

That price is surprisingly affordable considering the THX certification. The system has all the controls for volume and bass on the right satellite speaker. Inputs include 3.5mm jacks and RCA ports. The speakers also have a headphone port for private listening. The speakers can connect to several sources at once including your TV and PC.

Intel has rolled out with new chip logos for its Core i7, Core 2, Centrino, Celeron and Pentium processors, and unveiled its Star Rating System with one star denoting the lowest performance and five stars the highest.


The 5-star level consists of Core i7 Series, QX9000 Series and several other high-end mobile CPUs. And Celeron falls to the lowest segment, including Celeron E1000, 400, T1000, 900, 700 and 500 Series.

With the recent launch of Sandy Bridge, we had hoped to put together some Buyers' Guides covering the changes in the market. Unfortunately, with the recall/bug of the 6-series chipsets, SNB is now on hold. There will always be newer and faster parts just over the horizon, but while we await SNB and Bulldozer, we felt the time was ripe for a Budget Buyers' Guide update.
