A Look at Enterprise Performance of Intel SSDs

For the majority of the history of AnandTech we've hosted our own server infrastructure. A benefit of running our own infrastructure is that we're able to gain a lot of hands on experience with enterprise environments that we'd otherwise have to report on from a distance.

When I first started covering SSDs four years ago I became obsessed with the idea of migrating nearly every system over to something SSD based. The first to make the switch were our CPU testbeds. Moving away from mechanical drives ensured better benchmark consistency between runs as any variation in IO load was easily absorbed by the tremendous amount of headroom that an SSD offered. The holy grail of course was migrating all of the AnandTech servers over to SSDs. Over the years our servers seem to die in the following order: hard drives, power supplies, motherboards. We tend to stay on a hardware platform until the systems start showing the signs of their age (e.g. motherboards start dying), but that's usually long enough that we encounter an annoying number of hard drive failures. A well validated SSD should have a predictable failure rate, making it an ideal candidate for an enterprise environment where downtime is quite costly and in the case of a small business, very annoying.

Our most recent server move is a long story for a separate article but to summarize the move, we recently switched hosting providers and data centers. Our hardware was formerly on the east coast and the new datacenter is in the middle of the country. At our old host we were trying out a new cloud platform while our new home would be a mixture of a traditional back-end with a virtualized front-end. With a tight timetable for the move and no desire to deploy an easily portable solution at our old home before making the move we were faced with a difficult task: how do we physically move our servers half way across the country with minimal downtime?

Thankfully our new host had temporary hardware very similar in capabilities to our new infrastructure that they were willing to put the site on as we moved our hardware. The only exception was, as you might guess, a relative lack of SSDs. Our new hardware uses a combination of consumer and enterprise SSDs but our new host only had mechanical drives or consumer grade SSDs on tap (Intel SSD 320s).

In preparing for this move I realized we hadn't publicly discussed the performance and endurance issues associated with using consumer SSDs in an enterprise environment. What follows is a discussion of just that. Read on...

OCZ Octane 1.13 Firmware Update: Improving 4KB Random Write Performance

The one thing that OCZ has been missing for so many years is finally one of its staples: focus. The same company that dabbled in everything from brain mice to DIY notebooks is now almost exclusively an SSD company that peddles power supplies on the side. OCZ's penchant for aggressively trying new things hasn't faded away however. As an SSD maker, OCZ is currently or will in the near future, be shipping drives based on controllers from three different vendors - each with their own strengths. OCZ's relationship with SandForce continues and the Vertex 3 remains OCZ's highest performing offering. A recent partnership with Marvell gives OCZ early experience with native PCIe based SSDs, experience that is extremely important as the industry marches towards a new PCIe based interface standard for SSDs (SATA Express). Finally there's OCZ's own controller, the Indilinx Everest, which it is quickly building momentum behind. It's obviously in OCZ's best interests to have its own controllers in the bulk of the drives it makes, but one doesn't simply build a better controller than everyone else on the first try.

OCZ's Indilinx Everest 2 Launching in June 2012, Features Vastly Improved Random Performance

OCZ has a lot to show off this year at CES/Storage Visions, but the most exciting product from a client standpoint is its new Everest 2 controller. While the original Everest just launched two months ago, Everest 2 is expected in the next 6 months. OCZ already has silicon back and it is fast. 

Whereas Everest 1 was a competitive performer, Everest 2 is designed to really go after the performance crown. OCZ has focused more on small block performance as well as reducing write amplification, both issues I've brought up regarding the current Everest in our reviews of OCZ's Octane. Everest 2 is an updated controller (IDX400M00-BC vs. IDX300M00-BC) with a new firmware architecture designed to address these shortcomings. Both it and the original Everest controller will co-exist in the market for a period of time, but the Everest 2 will clearly be aimed at the high end. Target performance is around 550MB/s sequential reads, 500MB/s sequential writes and 90K 4KB random write IOPS (the Iometer screenshots in the gallery below show early 4KB Random Write and 128KB Sequential Write performance, using our own Iometer tests, in that order). If OCZ ends up really confident in the Everest 2, it might just end up being the heart of the Vertex 4...

AMD Raises the Mobile Performance Bar with Radeon HD 6990M

AMD’s last update to their mobile GPU lineup is now over six months old, which means we’re about due for another new part. Right on cue, and not long after NVIDIA’s GTX 580M speed bump, AMD briefed us on their latest update. Prior to agreeing to the NDA, all we got was that AMD Graphics would be making a “major mobile announcement”. That piqued our interest, as it could mean either new mobile GPUs, some other technology, or perhaps both. IGP performance world record smashed on overclocked GIGABYTE Llano motherboard

TweakTown.com have published an article and video where they have our forthcoming A75M-UD2H motherboard pushing AMD’s latest Llano APU to achieve an incredible P6281 points in 3DMark Vantage (performance mode). TweakTown is claiming this overclock as a world record for an integrated graphics processor, further ramping up the buzz of expectation regarding AMD’s eagerly anticipated Llano APU platform launch later this week. We’ve put a lot of work into making our new Llano-compatible AMD A series boards the ideal base for these new Accelerated Processor Units, or APUs, so of course we’re totally chuffed to see a record-breaking overclock on one of our boards at this early stage.

Using High Performance RAM with AMD A-Series APUs in DX11 Gaming

The Lynx GPU

In recent weeks we’ve been really excited to see the discrete-class performance of AMD’s new A-Series APUs, where a multi-core CPU and a full DirectX11 GPU basically sit side by side on one piece of silicon. This means that users can get fairly solid 3D gaming performance out of their rig using the onboard graphics alone.

Like all of today’s graphics processors, the Lynx GPUs that reside on these Llano APUs are also reliant on the memory sub-system to reach decent performance levels in today’s 3D games. This is because modern GPUs use parallel processing to churn through large data sets on-the-fly, using accelerated pixel and vertex shaders to make these realistic 3D environments come to life. Memory bandwidth, or basically the speed of your RAM, is therefore a crucial factor in getting this data to and from the GPU.

The upshot of all this is that if you use high-performance memory with your A-Series APU, the onboard Lynx GPU will have more bandwidth to play with, resulting in faster frame rates and smoother game-play in modern 3D games.

To give you a clearer idea about just how much extra performance you can expect see by using high-performance RAM, we’ve done some benchmarking and testing which we will share with you here.

Raising the Memory Clock

We took AMD’s A8350 APU, our GIGABYTE A75-UD4H board and tried a variety of differently clocked memory modules. We wanted to see exactly what effect raising the memory clock had on DX11 3D gaming performance. For this we used a variety of Corsair RAM modules; DDR3 1333, 1600, 1866, 2000 and 2400.

And just to make interesting, we also benchmarked the DDR 2400 rig with HiCookie’s overclocked GPU settings – to take a glimpse of the outer limit of A-Series APU performance.

Here are the benchmarks of four DirectX 11 titles that we enjoy playing; Dirt 3, Dragon Age II, Metro 2033 and Civilization V.

As you can see, you can expect to enjoy a decent performance boost with each successive memory clock increase. Civilization V stands out an example of how even relatively affordable DDR 1600 RAM can be used to effect a FPS change of huge significance – moving from 28 FPS to a much smoother 47 FPS. In short, APU users who invest in high-performance memory will be getting more performance out of their AMD APU – in 3 out of 4 cases we explored, that performance boost was pretty much incremental.

Overclocking Does Make a Difference

A few reviewers in the last week or so have concluded that AMD’s Llano APUs are entirely bandwidth constrained, and that overclocking the APU is more or less a waste of time. We attempted to explore that idea by getting our resident overclocker HiCookie to try and push the Lynx GPU on a higher RAM clock. The results here speak for themselves. Using our A75-UD3H board with HiCookie’s overclocked GPU settings, you’re entering another performance bracket entirely, with often double the frame rates of stock settings. If you’re going to use DDR 2400 RAM, there‘s clearly GPU headroom worth exploiting.

A Word to the Wise

So if you’re thinking of building a AMD A-Series rig anytime soon, bear in mind that the RAM you choose will have an effect on gaming performance. High performance RAM will allow you to get more out of the onboard Lynx GPU. But hey, don’t forget that you’ll probably have to configure the memory timings in BIOS according to the manufacturers recommendations (usually printed on the DIMM itself). SPD alone won’t get you there!

A little more than a month ago you might remember that we took a very close look at Sega's newest game title, Total War: Shogun 2. At the time of our article the game was only able to run on DirectX 9 with the promise that there would soon be a patch that would allow all of us to play the game in all the graphics splendor of DirectX 11. Well my friends, that time has come. Earlier this month a patch was released that not only added the ability to use DirectX 11, but it also added several benchmarks that are built right into the Steam interface for the game. All you have to do is right click on the Shogun 2 game link in you Steam library and the benchmarks are listed in the drop down menu. But we can talk more about that later.

Above you can see a screen shot of the updated settings screen. One of the other items that was mentioned as being included in the patch was the ability to adjust the AA settings in the game. A quick look at the screen above clearly shows its addition. One of the additions that I found rather cool was the ability to choose between DirectX 9 and Direct X 11 in the settings menu. So I guess you are probably asking yourself, "What the hell is the point of all of this?" Well, much like we did in the first article, we have taken the new found DirectX capability and benchmarked it to see how it would perform in-game with these more intense settings.

This time we used the Asus Radeon HD 6870 Video Card; as you will remember, last time we used a Sapphire Radeon 6850 Toxic Edition Video Card for our tests. We ran all of the exact same tests as we did in the previous article, but I also went one step further and ran all of the in-game benchmarks as well to see how those would run and to see if they would be a good candidate for future video card reviews. All right, enough about all of this stuff you aren't going to read anyway. Let's get to the benchmarks.

CyberPowerPC Gamer Xtreme FTW: Performance at Any Cost

It's time for another break from the Computex 2011 coverage, this time with an extreme system review.

There seems to be an interesting cottage industry between custom desktop boutiques in trying to build the single fastest machine consumers can buy, and it's not at all dissimilar to the kind of competitive thinking that produces utterly impractical video cards like the AMD Radeon HD 6990 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 that threaten to populate those machines. Somewhere along the line, someone said "screw it" and decided to figure out just how much of a speed demon they could build while still being able to market and sell it to consumers and support it without tarnishing the brand. DigitalStorm has pretty aggressively held on to our "fastest computer we've ever tested" crown for a while, but CyberPowerPC looks to steal it away with their Gamer Xtreme FTW Edition. AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Performance Review


Ever since the AMD Phenom II six core processors hit the market, I have been wanting to get my hands on one for my own system, I just had no real justification to buy one since my overclocked and unlocked X2 550 Black Edition was still kicking ass running at overclocks from 3.6 to 4.0GHz on all four cores. Since I am a gamer, that was more than enough power to rip apart any games out there, and it still is.

However, with recent updates to my system, I decided to go ahead and hop on the six core bandwagon to go along with my new AMD XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB upgrade. I wanted to play around with the AMD six core and see what I could get it to do with what I had.

So anyone that knows me, or has read this blog, knows I am an AMD user. I have been for a very long time. I stopped buying into all the hype hardware manufacturers put out there, all the misinformation from armchair experts and reviewers, and started to just trust my own judgment, testing it all out for myself whenever possible. This case was no different. I knew from all I had read since the X6 hit the market, that I would love it, I have yet to own an AMD processor I did not like. However I still wanted to see what I could get one to do and how it effected my games, my software, my system. Now that I have had mine installed for a few weeks and have had time to play with it. I figured it was time I could safely share my opinions on the processor.

So I ordered the 1090T Black Edition, with a stock clock of 3.2 and a Turbo Core of 3.6, to fit in my ASUS Crosshair Formula IV motherboard, and to compliment my new XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB video card. To start off, let me just say that this is a match made in heaven.

Gaming

First, all of these results are at stock speeds on the CPU, and let me say that if you are already running a nice fast quad core processor, don't expect a massive improvement in framerates by jumping to a six core and overclocking it to the same speeds. Yes, you will see an improvement, but it's not exactly Earth shattering.

Before installing my new XFX 6950, I left my old HIS 4870 Turbo 1GB in my system so I could better assume the performance increases I would see would be on the CPU alone, and not the superior new video card.

In the games I was playing prior to my update and after, I seen more of a performance increase in the games that were able to actually use all six cores, and no real improvement in those that could not, obviously. Bad Company 2 for example did show an overall increase and does use all six cores. Other titles that did not use all the cores saw little to no real improvement. Of course, that was a different story after I popped in the XFX 6950, but that's not what this review is about.

The Crysis 2 Multiplayer Demo hit PC after I had already installed the XFX 6950, so I have no real basis for a before and after comparison. What I can say is that the game does use all six cores, it does not max any of them out, and it runs stable at over 125FPS on a single 1920x1080 display on "Hardcore" settings. The maximum available in the demo.

Now I play a lot more games that just Bad Company 2 and Crysis 2, however those two games are representative of the main reason I upgraded from a high-end quad core to the 1090T. Future-proofing. I know that's not a realistic term when we are talking about PC's, especially for high-end gaming, so I don't like to use that term very often. In this case however, my idea of future-proofing is knowing that I will have the hardware to take advantage of next generation games that can actually benefit from having six cores. Knowing I can run them all at nice high stable framerates, on maximum settings, at 1080p, on my single display. That I will not have to sacrifice settings in order to make a game playable. At least not for a little while anyway.

As the gaming world sits at this moment, while I am doing this review, the high-end hardware that is out there on both sides of the fence, no matter if your an Intel, AMD, or Nvidia user, it's ahead of the software. The games that can actually take advantage of it are just now really hitting the market. So I wanted to take advantage of that, especially since the 1090T processors are only about $200. That's an amazing price for the performance you get!

Windows 7 Ultimate 64

Now onto Windows. Have I seen any real improvement in performance? From a pure operating system standpoint, not really. The system responds just as fast as it did with the quad core. What you would expect. The WEI on my system went up to 7.7 at stock speeds from 7.5 on the quad core. Not that anyone really puts any stock in those numbers.

However, if you are on a fast dual core, or an older and slower quad core, you will notice a much larger increase in performance, obviously.

Software & Applications

This really depends on the software, in my case, the most noticeable increase in performance came from video editing and rendering. I record most all my game footage with Fraps, then edit and render the final video using Ulead VideoStudio. I have noticed it takes less time to render a final video. Though I don't have exact numbers since I did not benchmark it prior to the upgrade. Trans-coding video to DVD is also faster, as you would expect.

Other "day-to-day" applications show no real noticeable difference.

Overclocking

Well, I like the Black Edition processors for a reason, I like to overclock. Though right now I am only running the processor at 3.6 on all six cores all the time, it's not because it's as far as I can push it. I was able to push it to 4.1GHz before I backed it down since the Arctic Freezer Pro 64 cooler I am using just can't cool the processor properly. I do not want to damage it.

However, while I was sitting at 3.8Ghz in my quest to 4+, I decided to compare Bad Company 2 and Crysis 2 from stock speeds and 3.8Ghz. You only see a small unnoticeable increase in framerates.

So that really told me that there is no need to push the processor to it's limit for gaming performance. Since the performance increase is not noticeable in six-core capable games when we are already hitting high stable framerates at stock speeds. The fewer cores a game uses, the more of a performance increase you see, for the most part. Of course, results will vary depending on the game in question as well as your other hardware and overall system configuration.

I am no enthusiast, I am a realist, I don't see the need to push my hardware to the max and shorten it's operation life for unnoticeable increases in gameplay performance you would not even know about without benchmark software running. This includes the few modern six-core capable games as well as the far more abundant 1-4 core capable games. 3.2 to 3.6Ghz is enough to run any games on the market at high stable framerates when coupled with other good hardware.

So what I will be doing is going with a "mild" overclock after I see how far the processor will go and remain stable. That being 3.6GHz and a 3.9GHz Turbo Core. More than enough to handle anything I will throw at it anytime soon. Knowing that I can push it past 4.0GHz easily when and if the time ever comes that it needs to be done.

All of this after I get my new cooler. A Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler. I was going to go with the NH-D14, however since I am not pushing the 1090T to it's limit, I decided the U12P will do just fine for the overclock the processor will be under and a lot better than the outdated Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 64 that is on there now.

Final Thoughts

For a price tag of about $200, the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor is a beast of a deal. This thing is powerful enough for any and all high-end gaming at stock settings, and has a lot of room to overclock should the need arise or you feel the desire to do so. If you couple this bad boy with other good hardware, just like a new 6900 series AMD GPU, 8GB of good quality DDR3 "gaming" RAM at 1600MHz or higher, a good quality motherboard to plug it all into, and a nice strong power supply to feed it, this processor will not disappoint.

I am very glad I made the jump to six cores. Knowing I am set for all the next generation games coming out this year that I am looking forward too is a great feeling. Right now is the perfect time to upgrade.

This processor is, in my opinion, by far the best "bang for your buck" option on the market for gamers and non alike. Once again I have to take my hat off to AMD for a fantastic product at a fantastic price. For proving that you don't have to overpay for performance. This is one customer AMD has had since the mid 90's, and one that is still happy to be living on this side of the fence. Sorry Intel.

Raptr Updates Gaming Client - Sees Major Performance Improvements

Correction: OCZ Vertex 3 Random Read Performance Data

A huge thanks goes out to AnandTech reader Andrei and some very attentive Xtreme Systems forum members. I just got an email pointing me to this thread where one particular number from our OCZ Vertex 3 and Intel SSD 510 articles was called into question. The problem? The 4KB random read numbers for the Vertex 3 were supiciously high. The reality? They were incorrect. 

I was just alerted to the error and quickly powered up the SSD testbed to recreate the test. It looks like the original numbers were either run at a queue depth of 32 or accidentally copied from one of the runs of 4KB random write tests. Either way the number was incorrect and has been fixed in all affected articles.

The updated numbers don't change our conclusions. The Vertex 3 is still the fastest next-generation SSD we've tested thus far and it still maintains a random read performance advantage over the Intel SSD 510.

The integrity of our test data is something we all take very seriously here. Errors like these do you a disservice and hurt the reputation I've worked so hard over the past 14 years to build. I do hope this oversight hasn't negatively impacted your opinion of AnandTech - we aren't perfect, but we strive to be. I do apologize to all of you for the error and I will be restructuring how I run and record my Iometer tests to avoid this particular issue from cropping up again.

Balancing Power, Price, and Performance in the Server CPU World

Our last comprehensive server and server CPU review focused on some of the best and fastest x86 servers on the market. This time, we focus on more humble servers. Performance is not necessarily priority one for many businesses; chances are that low power and budget are higher on the list. So we did our best to get the most interesting power sipping and inexpensive CPUs in the lab.

We selected three AMD Opterons and two Intel Xeons. On the Intel platform we test with the older but very cheap Xeon E5506 and the newer but more expensive low power Xeon L5630. AMD sent us three different Opterons: the low power Opteron 4162 EE, the performance/watt balancing Opteron 4170 HE, and the ultra cheap Opteron 4122. Read on to find out which of the five CPUs make sense in which situation. As always we use very realistisic benchmarking and power measurments to find out.
