Behind the decision to combine Lexmark's divisions

Lexmark International's recent decision to combine its laser and inkjet printer divisions was made to mirror the company's strategy of recent years, its chief executive said last week.

Paul Rooke is a firm believer that a company's management structure should follow its strategy, he said, and Lexington-based Lexmark's has been evolving to focus its inkjet division more on business customers, who are the core base for its laser division.

Lexmark has been radically realigning its inkjet division because the company found in recent years that the consumers who once bought their printers, which were sometimes bundled for free with computers, weren't buying enough of the highly profitable ink to meet profit expectations.

Since that time, the company has redesigned its inkjets to focus more on business customers, who print more than consumers. The printers now offer touchscreens and so-called "Smart Solutions" that allow companies to customize many settings and applications for individual users.

As the company evolved technologically to build those products, it already was consolidating technical functions because the laser and inkjet offerings were blending, Rooke said.

When the company began discussing the October retirement of CEO Paul Curlander and Rooke's elevation from inkjet leader to CEO, the latter said "it was a natural transition point, if you will ... to transition the rest of the organization."

"Structure follows strategy," he said. "I looked at our strategy and how it was evolving. As ... inkjet and laser's strategies were converging, it made sense to therefore converge the structure."

The combination of divisions didn't mean any job losses, the company has said, other than the position of inkjet leader, which wasn't filled after Rooke's promotion. Marty Canning, who led the laser division that was previously overseen by Rooke before he took over the troubled inkjet unit, leads the combined division.

The move will help Lexmark's salespeople, as the combined division will mean "a broader and better set" of offerings for customers as the development teams work united instead of as part of two divisions, Canning said.

"The sales organization was already representing both of these product portfolios," he noted. "They just didn't have a product development organization as aligned as we will be ...

"We can solve a larger set of their business problems because of this."

Rooke added that the combination of divisions also will mean "more consistency across the full breadth of technologies addressing business customers' needs."

"That will be a powerful statement for us," he said.

Employees have been receptive to the change, Rooke said, as many already had seen the shift coming since the inkjet strategy change in recent years.

One group of employees that will still be a standalone division, though, is Lexmark's recently acquired Perceptive Software unit. The Kansas-based company develops software that helps businesses manage content.

"We intentionally kept it separate because it's a smaller piece," Rooke said. "A lot of times if you try to combine a smaller piece with a bigger piece, it can get squashed, and we didn't want that to happen."

Perceptive Software CEO Scott Coons said the key is that Lexmark's reorganization hasn't changed its strategy.

"The goal is to grow Perceptive Software and leverage all the great things Lexmark brings to bear to grow our business," he said.

Reaction to the reorganization has been positive from the analyst community, Rooke said. Among those who find it encouraging is Ed Crowley, founder of Versailles-based printer industry research firm The Photizo Group.

"That's really going to be a big positive for them," Crowley said. "I think it's a smart move."

He said it didn't make sense at this point to have a full division and the infrastructure that comes with it to go after the business customers for inkjet.

"It really brings them to a singular focus," he said.

AMD Cayman PCB naked shots

After some naked shots of AMD's so-close-we-can-smell-it Radeon HD6970? Look no further, below there are some shots of the card with it's cooler taken off and put on it's coat hanger.

There are also various spec details regarding the GPU and it's board design also.

To begin with, the GPU indeed has a 256-bit wide memory interface, counting the memory chips on the obverse side, and looking at the size of the GPU package.

The size of the die, and taken that Cayman is a 40 nm GPU, indicate that Cayman is not much bigger than Cypress, it should be about 400~500 million transistors higher compared to Cypress.

Given the roughly 2500 million transistor count, the stream core count of 1536 seems more realistic. AMD is said to be using an architecturally
superior VLIW4 stream processor design that increases performance per mm² die area.

The board uses a high-grade 6+2+1+1 phase digital PWM voltage regulation design, draws power from 8+6 pin power connectors.

The reverse side of the PCB has no memory chips, so AMD might be using 2 Gbit memory chips to get 2 GB of total memory.

Goldman on Intel: ‘Avoid the Stock’

Tablets are the real deal and they’re affecting the PC market, say Goldman Sachs analysts, in a note on Intel pithily subtitled “tablets impacting PC dynamics, servers slowing, avoid the stock.”

Goldman’s Intel analysts piggy back on a call from new Goldman hardware analyst Bill Shope who estimates that PC and server units will grow 8% and 5%, year-over-year, which is “well-below consensus estimates for low-teens PC growth.”

With PC [manufacturers] now engaged with [vendors that sell chips that rely on rival chip technology licensed by ARM Holdings] the software ecosystems at Apple and Android growing quickly, and Microsoft potentially enabling Windows for ARM, we believe Intel will face increased processor competition. Given Intel’s 3% dividend yield, resumed buyback, and the 81% increase in November short interest, we remain Neutral rated on the stock and prefer [Texas Instruments] in large-cap semis.

The Philly semiconductor index is down noticeable 0.8% Monday. As we’ve mentioned tons of times, the index of chip makers has long been considered something of a leading indicator for the broader markets. But notes such as Goldman’s seem to suggest that semiconductor industry leaders might be battling some structural shifts, which would seem to make us a bit more skeptical as to the measure’s usefulness on a cyclical basis.

Sanyo Xacti DMX-HD800

Sanyo Electric Co Ltd will launch the "Xacti DMX-HD800," a camcorder supporting 720p HDTV resolution, in Japan Aug 22, 2008. A new sleek, slim high definition dual camera Xacti that can take both stills and videos. The camera sports a compact and light-weight body, and easily saves data onto SD/SDHC memory cards for convenience. The DMX-HD800 will take stills and videos used on a personal computer or for the Web, houses a new three-dimensional digital noise reduction (3DDNR) filter, and adds the ‘Face Chaser’ for both stills and videos with an active scanner visible on the monitor.

Dell launches Latitude range of business laptops

Dell just announced a bunch of laptops, but these two are particularly interesting to us because we love ultra-portables (who doesn't?). The 12.1" Latitude E4200 weighs only 2.2 Lbs (thanks partly to its SSD drive), making it the lightest Latitude laptop ever. And it does that while preserving a size that allows to have a comfortable keyboard. Secondly, the E4300 is a 13.3", which is probably the best compromise between portability and work comfort. It weighs 3.39lbs. Both laptops feature a 1280x800 resolution display
The Latitude E6400 and E6500 are replacing the Latitude D630 and D830 as the new 14- and 15.4-inch form factors, respectively. Both have a magnesium-alloy backbone like their predecessors, but you'll notice that Dell has moved away from a matted silver finish in favor of brushed aluminum paint. Dell understands that design, especially in this age, is an important business element, which is why red-and-blue-color schemes will also be available in the September 2008 timeframe. Other notable features include dual-pointing devices, as the E6400 and E6500 have both a pointing stick and a touchpad; an RFID SmartCard sensor rather than an actual slot; and a one-screw-remove-plate at the base, so getting to the innards of the laptop is as simple as removing one screw. One of the most memorable things about the D630 was the impressive battery life and multiple battery options. With both laptops, you have the option of a 9- or 12-cell battery.

Dell's new Latitudes feature:

  • All-day computing on the E6400 with breakthrough battery life of up to 19 hours
  • Full-frame magnesium alloy construction and all-metal hinges
  • Sophisticated keyboard design
  • Ease of use with Dell ControlPoint, centralizing control of user settings for power management, connectivity configurations and security management in a single application
  • First business-class laptop with an intelligent backlit keyboard that automatically adjusts to ambient light levels
  • Exclusive ControlVault solution - intelligent security sub-processors with embedded non-volatile storage that centralizes and helps protect user credentials and security keys in a single hardened security ''vault'' away from the systems main drive
  • The E6500 is the only laptop with both a contact-less Smart Card reader and a fingerprint readers that complies with Federal Information Processing Standards
  • Simplified IT with compatible peripherals, adapters, docking and robust manageability features across the entire portfolio.

Hitachi's New Blu-ray Camcorder: DZ-BD10HA

The Hitachi model DZ-BD10HA model Blu-ray Hybrid with built-in 30GB hard disk drive (HDD) is priced at a Manufacturers Advertised Price (MAP) of $999. The camcorder will be available in Japan on August 9th and will be available in North America in September 2008.

A step above from its predecessor announced last year, the DZ-BD10HA from Hitachi's Consumer Group contains several new features and improvements. A newly developed 7 mega pixel CMOS image sensor, which captures rich and vibrant videos and stills in FullHD (1920 x 1080) High Definition. The new DZ-BD10HA can also record up to 4 hours 20 minutes of 1920x1080 video or 8 hours 40 minutes of 1440x1080 video onto the built-in 30 GB HDD. Additionally, the built-in SDHC card slot provides added flexibility by allowing for Full HD video and still recordings.

The new DZ-BD10HA also offers a dubbing function that allows Full HD video to be transferred with the single push of a button from either the HDD or SDHC card to the BD drive, all within the camcorder, without having to connect to a PC. Editing functions such as split, splice, delete, merge, and transitions can also be performed within the camcorder before dubbing for additional functionality. The Transcoding feature allows for the camcorder to transfer full HD videos off the HDD or SDHC card to standard definition DVD discs for the sharing of videos with friends and family who may not own a Blu-ray player yet.

Another new feature added to this year's camcorder is face detection, which automatically detects and focuses on faces to provide the most true to life colour accuracy and clarity. Additionally, Hitachi has developed a compact, low power consumption, quiet and highly reliable 8cm BD/DVD drive, which results in a 20% reduction in overall volume compared with last year's DZ-BD7HA Blu-ray hybrid camcorder.

"Hitachi is well known for having introduced the world's first DVD camcorder, the world's first Hybrid camcorder with a DVD drive and a Hard Disk Drive and the world's first Blu-ray camcorder," said Daniel Lee, Vice President of Marketing at Hitachi Home Electronics, America. "Hitachi continues to improve upon and deliver cutting-edge and innovative products, and is pleased to offer the latest upgrades in camcorder technology to its customers and consumers. The new DZ-BD10HA underscores Hitachi's commitment to developing original technologies that consumers can easily embrace."

While keeping the same core design as the previous Blu-ray camcorder, the DZ-BD10HA has several added features and an ameliorated design. These features include:

Three Format Hybrid Compatibility

This camcorder has the versatility of being able to record HD video onto three separate formats (Blu-ray Disc, Hard Drive, SDHC) and provides the flexibility and ease of playback and long recording time all in one camcorder.

7 Mega Pixel CMOS Image Sensor

The CMOS image sensor in this camcorder is designed to record the highest resolution video with effective 4.67 mega pixels while minimizing distortion and artifacts to ensure the most clear and vibrant high definition picture. The camcorder is also capable of capturing 6.22 mega pixel stills onto an optional SD or SDHC card.

One-Touch Dubbing

With the push of one button the user can transfer HD video from the SDHC card or hard drive to a Blu-ray disc all within the camcorder; this eliminates the need to turn on a computer.

Face Detection

This feature automatically detects and focuses on the face to provide true-to-life colour accuracy and sharp picture quality to the user.

O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization)

O.I.S. automatically detects and cancels camera shake by accurately stabilizing the lens to produce the most sharp and vibrant picture possible.

  • Creative ZEN Mozaic

The Creative ZEN Mozaic is the latest example of Creative's long-standing tradition of developing good-looking budget portable media players. The Mozaic comes in 2GB ($59.99 direct), 4GB ($79.99), and 8GB ($119.99) capacities, and its control pad, as its name would suggest, looks a lot like a tile mosaic. It's the kind of player that puts fashion before function, but that doesn't mean the Mozaic is a clunker.

Since it is a new type of player (with an extremely awful design, if I might add), here are the specifications for your perusal.

    • 2GB/4GB/8GB capacities
    • Built-in speaker
    • 1.8" TFT display
    • Multimedia playback of audio, video and photos
    • Integrated FM radio
    • Voice recording capability
The Zen Mozaic will come in black, silver and (oh no!) pink colors. The surface is definitely not my cup of tea, and I would say that this is an acquired taste. Like all recent Creative players, this model will come with a pretty powerful speaker just in case you want to share the musical love with everyone in your immediate vicinity.

Logitech V550 Nano Cordless Laser Mouse

Logitech today introduced the V550 Nano, a wireless laser mouse designed for Mac laptop users on the go.

The V550 Nano features a Clip-and-Go dock for attaching the V550 Nano to your laptop. This dock is a peg with an adhesive back that sticks to the outside of your laptop. The mouse itself has a hole on the underside that snaps on to the Clip-and-Go peg. Logitech includes a Clip-and-Go removal tool with the mouse, which you can use to remove the peg from your laptop.

You can choose from gray with silver accents or silver with cool clue accents as colors. The Logitech V550 Nano cordless laser mouse will retail for $59.99 as it hits the US and Europe later this month.

    Cowon iAudio 7 MP3 player

The iAudio 7 DAP player has been released by Cowon. You may have seen them before with the ever creative iAudio 6 player. The screen is just 1.3 inches making the player very small. The screen can be display 260k colours. It now uses flash memory (8GB) rather then the 0.85 inch disk drive in version 6. Support has been added for FLAC and OGG. What impresses me most, other then the looks of the device, is that it has a lithium polymer battery which will last 60 hours. The DAP can be charged via USB which is great if you are out and about travelling. The iAudio 7 player will set you back $246 for the 8GB flash version.

    Lenovo Ideapad s10

Lenovo is joining the ranks of companies that believe thin is in.

Lenovo officially announced this morning its IdeaPad S10 - a 10-inch mini-notebook running the 1.6GHz Intel Atom chipset. Do we have a MSI Wind or Eee PC 1000H killer on our hands? Quite possibly.

Two configurations of the 9.8 x 7.2 x .8-1.08-inch and 2.4-pound S10 will be available in the U.S. Priced at $399, one will have 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. The other marked at $449.99 will have 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The specs seem to indicate that the system will support 2GB of RAM, so we assume swapping out RAM will be easy.

Initially the netbook will come preloaded with Microsoft Windows XP. However, Lenovo told us that a version of the S10 running Linpus Linux will be available is other countries.

We cannot wait to get our hands on the mini-notebook as the keyboard is reportedly “85 percent of the size of a full-function notebook PC’s keyboard.” A close look at the pictures in the gallery below strongly suggest a large and comfortable touchpad with dedicated right and left mouse buttons. The touchpad will support multi-touch gestures. The 10-inch 1024 x 600-pixel (WSVGA) resolution screen also looks extremely promising and is LED backlit for power saving. The speakers lining the front of the system also give it a different look and will hopefully blast out some decent sound as they aren’t buried on the bottom.

Lenovo has seemed to work in all the important ports. The netbook includes Bluetooth connectivity, 802.11b/g , and an ExpressCard for popping in a mobile broadband card. It also sports a LAN connection and VGA-out. It has a 1.3-megapixel webcam, two USB ports, mic and headphone jacks, and a 4-in-1 card reader. I am hesitant about only 2 USB ports.

As for battery life, Lenovo is promising that the system will be available with a 3-cell battery, capable of 3 hours, and 6-cell, capable of lasting 6 hours.

The IdeaPad S10 will come in white, black, and a glossy ruby red. It will be on retail shelves in the U.S. on September 28 and perhaps on Lenovo.com a bit earlier. It will be available in China, however, on September 5 and in the far east on September 10

    Cowon S9

For those of you that like your media players, then the new Cowon S9 Curve is one to check out.

The Cowon S9 has a curved backside and features a 3.3 inch color AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 480x272px resolution and 16m colors.AMOLED screens are capable of lighting themselves and does not require backlighting like LCD screens. The Bluetooth support is listed as A2DP and AVRCP compatible which means audio streaming and remote controlling, and no support for headset mode or file transfer is listed. The interface will auto rotate as you turn the player and be flash, so hopefully that means it's skinable right out of the box. With a 500 MHz dual core CPU it should hopefully be rather quick. It comes with 9 EQ presets and like other Cowon players it does both Ogg Vorbis and FLAC. Size wise it will be 57.08 x 105.75 x 12.7 mm

It's the video aspect of the S9 that will disappoint many people. It only plays at the screens native resolution, which is rubbish in my opinion. This is most likely to make sure such players as the O2 have a market as well, but in doing so they limited a player which could be the new big hit and native Xvid support without resolution limits would definitely help towards that. It does do WMV and AVI (prob Xvid) like the D2 and h.264 has been added as a third supported video format. This means better quality per megabyte of data, and it might mean it will play back PSP formatted video. Don't get your hopes up however as h.264 compatible portable players tend to be extremely picky on what they will play back. The video support will do the job, but it could have been soooo much better - especially since the player has TV out, a feature that was barely a novelty on the D2.

Lastly, the capacity. A lot of people have been pointing out that this thing doesn't have memory expansion, something that's become a must have after the reign of the D2. With capacities up to 16GB at release and 32GB later, it isn't ever capable of reaching the D2's 48GB combined storage space. Not to mention the 32GB version will most likely be rather expensive, maybe more than people are willing to pay.

Details of the eagerly awaited full frame Canon 5D Mark II dSLR are out. The camera packs a whopping 16MP full frame sensor, comes with full weather sealing and anti-dust features, and has the ability to rattle out images at 6 FPS.

The full-frame sensor has been boosted up to 21.1 megapixels, the LCD is a high-resolution 3-inch beauty (like more recently released competitors), Live View shooting has been added, the sensitivity range has been raised to ISO 50 - ISO 25,600, auto focus points have been bumped from 9 to 15 points, and continuous shooting speed has been bumped from 3- to 3.9fps.
